The Ultimate House Moving Checklist: 6 Weeks Before to Move Day

Moving house in Bengaluru involves more admin than most people expect — from BESCOM name transfers to society NOCs and broadband termination. Missing any of these can mean running back to your old address weeks after the move. This week-by-week checklist covers everything.

6 Weeks Before: Decision & Research

Confirm your new address and possession date
Research and shortlist 2–3 packers and movers — check Google reviews and get written quotes
Set a firm moving date — avoid month-end (25th–5th) when movers are peak-booked and cost more
Visit the new home — measure doorways, lift dimensions, and parking access for the moving truck
Begin decluttering — sell or donate items you won't take to the new home
Start collecting boxes from local shops or order from your mover

5 Weeks Before: Notify & Admin

BESCOM (electricity): Apply for name transfer or new connection at the new address — takes 2–4 weeks
BWSSB (water): Notify of vacating; apply for new connection at destination
Gas agency (Indane/HP/Bharat): Apply for cylinder transfer or surrender — takes 3–4 weeks
Internet/broadband: Request disconnection with 30-day notice; order new connection at new address immediately
Mobile number: Update your address with your telecom provider (Jio/Airtel/Vi)
Bank accounts: Update address with all banks (savings, salary, credit cards)
Notify children's school of address change and any mid-year transfer requirements

4 Weeks Before: Housing Society Tasks

Current society: Apply for NOC (No Objection Certificate) — most Bengaluru societies need 15–30 days
Current society: Clear all dues (maintenance, parking, club) and return the NOC receipt
Current society: Schedule the goods vehicle entry date with security — many societies require advance notice
New society: Complete resident registration and hand over documents (copy of agreement/sale deed)
New society: Get goods vehicle entry permission for the moving truck
Book service elevator or goods lift at new building for moving day

3 Weeks Before: Packing Begins

Confirm your mover booking — get a written job order with itemised services
Start packing off-season items (unused clothes, books, décor, extra kitchen items)
Label every box: room name + brief contents + fragile if applicable
Pack a separate "essentials box" — bedding, kettle, phone chargers, toiletries, documents
Photograph all electronic connections before unplugging (TV, home theatre, router)
Dismantle beds, wardrobes, and dining tables that won't fit through doors assembled

2 Weeks Before: Official Address Updates

Aadhaar card: Update address via UIDAI website or Aadhaar Seva Kendra — takes 2–4 weeks
Driving licence & RC: Update address via Parivahan portal or nearest RTO
Voter ID: Update via NVSP portal or via your local Electoral Registration Officer
PAN card: Update address with NSDL or UTI ITSL
Passport: Update address (required if travelling abroad soon)
Update address with your employer's HR (for payslips, tax filing)
Inform your insurance providers (health, life, vehicle) of address change
Update delivery addresses on Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, and other apps

💡 Bengaluru Tip: The BESCOM name transfer process can be delayed significantly. Start it 6 weeks before — not 2 weeks. Carry copies of your sale/lease agreement, Aadhaar, and the previous owner's final bill to the nearest BESCOM office (not sub-division office for this).

1 Week Before: Final Preparations

Confirm moving date and start time with your mover one more time
Pack remaining items except daily-use essentials
Clean out the refrigerator and freeze — defrost 24 hours before move
Dismantle any wall-mounted items (TV, AC, mirrors, shelves)
Arrange overnight parking for the moving truck if your street has restrictions
Prepare cash for any incidentals — tip for crew, society gate entry, etc.
Charge all devices and portable power banks the night before

Moving Day

Be present when the moving crew arrives — don't leave the home unattended
Walk through the home with the supervisor before packing starts — point out fragile items
Keep your essentials box and valuables (documents, jewellery) with you personally
Take a full video walkthrough of the packed house before the truck departs
Do a final check: every room, every cupboard, balcony, loft, terrace, parking bay
Hand over keys only after you are 100% satisfied the house is empty
At the new home: direct movers room by room using your floor plan
Unpack and set up essentials (kitchen, bedroom) the same evening

After the Move: Week 1

Inspect all items for damage — report any claims to your mover within 48 hours
Get your internet connection activated at the new home
Register with the nearest police station for tenant verification (mandatory in Bengaluru)
Update your address on LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and other social profiles
Find the nearest BBMP office for any civic registration needs
Introduce yourself to your new neighbours and building association
